My Summer at Tarragon

Michelle, Tarragon's engineering intern, spent the summer learning the ins and outs of restaurant operations — and discovering a team culture where passion, speed, and quality pull in the same direction.

When I first met with the Tarragon team, I expected it to be like every other interview — formulaic. Going into the meeting, I thought it was going to revolve around algorithms, data structures, and whatever coding problem I was about to struggle through. Instead, one of the first questions I got asked was, "What's the most recent thing you went down a rabbit hole excited learning about?"

I don't remember every detail of the coding interview anymore. I definitely remember getting stuck on parts of the problem. But strangely, that's not what stayed with me. What I remember is leaving the interview feeling like I'd just talked to a team who genuinely enjoyed learning and building.

That conversation made Tarragon feel different from every other company I interviewed with.

Looking back, that first impression wasn't a coincidence. It was only a glimpse into Tarragon's culture and values that also shape the initiatives they bring to serving the customers.

One phrase I was told was, "You don't need to rush." At first, that surprised me. Startups have a reputation for moving fast, and Tarragon certainly does. Customer issues are investigated quickly. New features ship constantly. It's not unusual to see pull requests opened late in the evening because someone is genuinely eager to get a fix into users' hands. But there was never pressure to move quickly just for the sake of moving quickly.

The emphasis is always on quality, and surprisingly, that didn't slow things down at all. By understanding the system before changing it, asking questions, and optimizing instead of simply checking tasks off a list, Tarragon built a system that is accurate, reliable, and flexible.

Working at Tarragon made this one of the most memorable summers for me. I learned that passion, execution speed, and quality are never opposing and can coexist. Together, these things create better products and a stronger team.
